Welcome To Our B&B

Situated a stones throw from the Castle, Old Fishergate House is one of the oldest houses in St Andrews dating from around 1650. Originally it was five fisherman's houses but it has been beautifully renovated to make one comfortable house. The house was awarded a Pride of Place Certificate in 2005 by the St Andrews Preservation Trust. The house is very well situated in North Castle Street with the University, Byre Theatre, shops and the golf courses all within walking distance.

St Andrews Local Information:

Old Fishergate House is situated in North Castle Street just 50 metres from St Andrews Castle and close to the Cathedral which now unfortunately in ruins was the largest in Scotland when it was completed in 1318. Much of the stone used to build the house came from St Andrews cathedral.

St Andrews town centre is a few minutes walk away, as is the University, St Salvator's Chapel, the picturesque harbour and a host of buildings of historical interest. The town still retains its medieval character, although as an internationally known golfing and university town it has a vibrant mix of students, golfers, visitors and residents.

There is a local bus station whilst the main line rail station is at Leuchars a short bus/taxi ride from town. Whilst the nearest International Airport is Edinburgh - 1 hr 15mins by car whilst Glasgow is a bit further about 2hrs by car.

The famous Old Course, the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse and the British Golf Museum are within a 10 minute walk. The recently rebuilt Byre Theatre is only a couple of hundred metres away and stages some excellent productions.

B&B Helpful Information:

B&Bs and guest houses may be operated as either a secondary source of income or a primary occupation. Often the owners themselves prepare the breakfast and clean the rooms, but some bed and breakfasts hire staff for cleaning or cooking. B&B properties with hired professional management are uncommon (unlike inns or hotels) but may exist especially if the same owner operates multiple B&Bs.
A bed and breakfast (typically shortened to B&B or BnB) is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast. Bed and breakfasts are often private family homes and typically have between four and eleven rooms, with six being the average.[1] A B&B usually has the hosts in the house.
Bed and breakfast is also used to describe the level of catering included in a hotel's room prices, as opposed to room only, half-board or full-board.
Generally, guests are accommodated in private bedrooms with private bathrooms, or in a suite of rooms including an en suite bathroom. Some homes have private bedrooms with a bathroom which is shared with other guests. Breakfast is served in the bedroom, a dining room, or the host's kitchen.
When a B&B operates in a niche market it can be of the floating type such as boats, houseboats & barges. In some parts of the UK, former lighthouse keeper quarters have been turned into B&B rooms after the light has been de-activated.
Registered Irish B&Bs are star rated by Failte Ireland and along with the majority unregistered B&Bs, form the B&B Owners Association Ireland. Generally, B&Bs in Ireland are family owned & run, with a small percentage being leased/managed but still with the personal service expected in this sector. Owners / Managers nearly always live on premises. Breakfast can mean a cooked 'Irish Fry' or in Northern Ireland a 'Belfast Fry'.
Generally B&B options don't fare as well as those offered by hotels, although some up-market B&Bs also exist. When you are B&B searching in a seaside towns, there is usually more available than those in immediate countryside.
B&B grades are usually managed by the Tourist Board on a star system. 3, 4 and 5-star establishments have a higher standard. A majority of B and Bs in the UK have en-suite facilities.
A B&B accepting credit cards tends to be the norm nowadays. If this is important to you, please check with the host at the time of booking. B&B english hosts are more likely to accept credit cards than welsh hosts. A b&b booking service is always available with the large online directories.
The majority of B&B proprietors allow all day access for guests staying more than one night but please check and do remember that you are in a private home and not a hotel. B&Bs nearly always offer free WiFi facilities.
Contact the B&B immediately if you need to cancel, in order to give the host the best chance to re-let the room. Please remember a booking is a contract under English law. If you cancel, the host will try to re-let the room, but if they are unable to do so you are liable to pay some payment. B&B cancellation policy is generally unique to their requirements.
Many B&Bs welcome children and usually have special rates for children, particularly if a family room is available. Some are more suitable for children than others - please read the description for each home. If a cot or highchair is needed please ask at the time of booking.
Finally, remember you are staying in a family home and enjoying the benefits of that. It should be accepted that every B&B provides a unique experience.
The B&B sector in the UK is a £2 billion 'cottage industry', consisting of some 27,000 small owner-managed businesses.
The B&B Association is the UK trade association for B&Bs and Guest Houses. In 2016 TripAdvisor revealed British B&Bs were rated 8.8% higher than hotels.
Ideally there should be a minimum level of care available to all, and especially to those who need it most and an integrated care programme is called for to deliver this.
